If you watch the show you'll notice that he always introduces himself as "The Doctor" to which most people reply "Doctor Who?" and that's where the name comes from. &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_%28Doctor_Who%29#Alias_the_Doctor" rel="nofollow"&gt;Wikipedia has a more comprehensive explanation&lt;/a&gt;.

It &lt;em&gt;is&lt;/em&gt; one of the longest running sci-fi series, but I'm not sure if it's &lt;strong&gt;the&lt;/strong&gt; longest running show ever. :-)</description>
